Aldeasa opens a second shop at Santiago

Showing continued resilience in difficult conditions, Aldeasa has managed to open a 609sq m shop in the arrivals zone within the international terminal at Santigao de Chile Airport, following the reopening of certain parts of the terminal after the terrible February 27 earthquake which claimed several hundred lives and caused massive damage to buildings - including the airport terminal.

European traffic +3.9%

ACI Europe yesterday reported that traffic figures for the beginning of the new year continue to show improvement at European airports, with overall passenger volume up +3.9% in January 2010 compared with January 2009. Overall freight traffic among European airports also increased by +20.2% in January 2010 when compared with the corresponding month in 2009.

Gatwick shows good growth

London Gatwick Airport handled a total of just over 2m passengers in February 2010, an increase of 3.2%, with its most important traffic sector -European scheduled traffic - up 10.5% to 927,700 passengers and 'other long haul' traffic up 7% to 405,400 passengers.

Irish State issues major challenge to DAA

The Dublin Airport Authority (DAA) has issued a statement saying that it notes the recent decision by the Minister for Transport, Noel Dempsey T.D. to conclude the public tender competition for the operation of certain aspects of Terminal Two at Dublin Airport and the minister's comment that DAA must stay within laid down benchmark costs, or 'alternative arrangements' for the operation of T2 will have to be made.

AAS responds to duty free security breach

<b>Amsterdam Airport Schiphol (AAS) has responded to the fall out from a Dutch SBS television programme shown last Sunday - and subsequently widely circulated in the press and corroborated - that investigative journalists successfully breached its airport security on February 16 by purchasing bottles from AAS' in-house run duty free store, refilling them (with water) and then representing them as new purchases at the airport shop - whereupon staff packed them in sealed bags and they were taken onboard two airlines bound for London (British Midland) and Washington (United Airlines).</b>
