Threat to Duty-Free Tobacco averted - for now

The WHO FCTC INB3 meeting on a Protocol on the illicit trade of tobacco products ended in Geneva on 5 July without any agreement on a proposal to ban world-wide duty-free sales of tobacco products.

The proposal was based on the completely unfounded allegation that duty-free was a major source of illicit trade, an argument strenuously refuted by UKTRF and other travel retail associations in representations to their respective Governments. However the proposal will again be considered at the INB4 meeting in March 2010, so further lobbying will be necessary.
