Food and Alcohol LabellingCreated on 26th of August 2009 Last Modified on the 26th of August 2009 In February 2008 the Commission published a proposal for a regulation to re-cast and simplify existing EU and national legislation on the labelling of food. The draft regulation proposes mandatory nutritional labelling on the front of the pack. Derogations are provided for alcoholic drinks but the Commission will also produce a report and proposals on these within five years. The draft regulation is currently being considered by the European Parliament. On behalf of UKTRF and other national associations, the European Travel Retail Council is seeking derogation from the front of pack labelling requirements for confectionery products in duty-free and travel retail outlets. It is also seeking the ability to use English as a standard language for products supplied to travel retail outlets across the EU. These changes are being sought such that manufacturers and suppliers would be able to use common stock across travel retail shops in the EU, rather than having different packaging for each country. This is a prime example of the type of issue which the Espace Voyageur concept would address. |
