Restrictions on Duty-free to the USACreated on 16th of August 2006 Following the terrorist arrests on Thursday 10 August 2006, the Department of Transport introduced strict limits on the items that passengers may carry into aircraft cabins. The restrictions have been eased slightly as from Monday 14 August, such that passengers may now carry one small piece of cabin luggage through the airport security search point. However this must not contain any liquids or gels; any such items must be packed into passengers' baggage and checked in as hold luggage. Once airside, travellers to any destination except the USA may take all items purchased in the departures lounge into the aircraft cabin (including duty-free or duty-paid alcohol and perfume). However, passengers boarding flights to the USA are not permitted to take any liquids or gels into the aircraft cabin and there is a second security search at the gate to enforce this restriction. It is impossible at this stage to predict how long the restrictions on US flights will remain in force. |
